Key Features: snap-on blue light blocking relaxation filters
"One of my favorite things about this product were the "Relaxation Filters". They come with an orange one that is a softer light that is perfect to help me fall asleep faster" Why Not Because I Said So.blogspot.com
"Light at night is bad for your health, and exposure to blue light emitted by electronics and energy-efficient lightbulbs may be especially so."Harvard Health Letter, Harvard Medical School
Q. What is blue light and why is this an issue for LED Lights?
White light LEDs shine a lot of blue light. This includes LEDs used in cell phones, tablets, lighted ereaders, laptops, flat panel displays, and LED lights such as flashlights, clip-ons, headlamps, and Beam n Read Lights.
Light affects living things including humans, animals, and plants. Different colors (wavelengths) of light have different impacts. The blue wavelengths of light have both good and bad effects depending on the time of day and the intensity.
Daylight is rich in blue light. At night, absent artificial lighting, there is no blue light. Blue light is energizing and keeps you alert which is helpful during the day. Blue light can also be stressful on the eyes. At night, when it's time for the body to relax for sleep, exposure to blue light can impair the body's preparation for sleep.
Studies have shown that the blue light from the LEDs in electronic devices is impairing peoples sleep. See our Pinterest Board on Blue Light and Sleep for a collection of articles on this topic.
Light is needed for a lot of tasks performed when relaxing for sleep. This includes tasks such as reading or knitting in bed, reading to a child when putting them to bed, and checking on or assisting a child or another adult when they are in bed. Light may be needed in the middle of the night for a trip to the bathroom, change a child's diaper, or maybe to the kitchen for a late night snack. So what can you do to avoid getting yourself or others stimulated by blue light?
First of all, before and after going to bed avoid the use of lighted electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, and lighted ereaders. Second, try to use light sources with no or low blue light. LED lights and flourescent/compact flourescent bulbs shine a lot of blue light. Incandescent bulbs shine a lot less blue light. Candles shine even less blue light but for safety reasons candles are not a good substitute.
Blue light can also be filtered out by wearing orange goggles or using orange or red filters on your light sources. Orange goggles can be found for under $10 as well as for much higher prices. Two models of our Beam n Read Hands-Free Lights include snap-on blue light blocking filters. The orange filter fully blocks blue light and shines a warm, soft, incandescent type light. The red filter blocks both blue and green light. The red filter also suppresses ambient light which is helpful if you have a bed partner extra sensitive to light or want light to read or work on a red-eye flight without disturbing the passenger in the next seat.
With a unique combination of features, accessories, versatility, and battery runtime, our patented lights are unmatched by other portable, personal lights. Accessories include clip-on filters for more relaxing light, a USB Power Kit, and clip-on magnifier lenses. Included accessories vary by model.

One thing that this light has that others don't is a set of clip-on filters specifically designed to block blue radiation that can wreak havok on your sleep! The orange filter completely blocks wavelengths shorter (bluer) than 550nm while still maintaining good intensity, and the red filter not only blocks blue wavelengths, but only allows wavelengths greater than approx. 570nm yet still provides enough broadband emission that red text on white paper is still easily readable. The red clip on filter changes the light to a sort of night vision, this is best to use if you're around someone that is sensitive to light and gets the "I can't sleep grumpies". The orange clip on filter changes the light from cool (daytime like) to warm (incandescent). If you find that you strain your eyes while trying to read in brighter light, this filter is totally for you! I'm prone to migraines and this light with the orange filter is like my new best friend. I found the Red filter to be perfect for checking on the pets (or kids) in the middle of the night (without waking them up). I found that by using the Orange filter, that I could read in bed at night (and not disturb hubby but still bright enough to see the book) on the rare occasion that I was unable to sleep. I really love this Beam n Read! It is very bright when you use it without the filters, but I love using the filters. The orange filter is my favorite. It really soothes me when I'm reading in bed. If you've got someone in bed with you who is trying to sleep, use the red filter as it also blocks ambient light. Christy's Cozy Corners
I must admit, I wasn't prepared for how much I would enjoy the orange and red filters. I was expecting them to make it more difficult to read in the dark, not easier. It was suggested that I try the filters out and then try the light without either filter and I was amazed at how much more I liked reading in the dark with the filters. It's a toss up, but I think I like the orange filter the best. It really is easier on the eyes and the light is relaxing enough that it doesn't wind me up before going to sleep.Katies Clean Book Collection

The amber filter! I love it! I haven't used the red filter as much but the amber one I am addicted to. Not Everyones Momma.
I love that you can soften the light by using the red or orange filters. It's a really helpful feature! The filter is great for when I want to check and make sure my kids are still covered up at night, but I don't want to risk waking them with a brighter light.Brooke Blogs
I love the idea of having the red and orange filters. The orange filters allows the bright daylight-type light to adjust to warmer, calmer type light. The red filter is my favorite. My hubby doesn't like when I turn on a bright reading light in the dark. I won't have to worry about that anymore with the red filter. It cuts down ambient light, making everyone happy.Mom with a Dot Com
I am not sure how I lived without this product all these years. I am a massive reader, especially at night in bed...
From the first moment I started using the Beam n Read light, I could read my books so much easier and it didn't keep my husband awake. I do use the orange filter to mute the light, but it still makes it so much easier to read (and stay up way too late enjoying all those books I have piling up!). I haven't tried the red filter or without any filter at all because I think I found my perfect solution with the orange filter. ... We give this 5 paws, and if my scale went higher I would rate it higher!

I also tried it indoors with the orange and red filters. For me, the orange gives the pages a sepia tone, very workable and easy on the eyes, while the red is actually calming. I was surprised actually by the red's affect because when I initially attached the filter I thought....it looks like I'm trying to develop photos in here....but after a few minutes, I could see how easy it was to read the page without disturbing anyone in the vicinity. The light alone was nice and bright, but I loved it with the two filters. I think it did a great job of lighting the pages of my current read while keeping my hands free for holding the book and turning pages. When using the filters , I definitely felt as if the diffused light was perfect for reading without being so bright as to keep me awake and stimulated. A great thing for those of us who like to read to wind down at the end of a long day.Melissas Eclectic Bookshelf .com
Reading with Blue Light Blocking Filter
Not only does it have a white light option, but red and orange so that you are using a less invasive light form. This also allows you to fall asleep easier than you do when you are exposed to blue light.Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock
I have a kindle fire and read before bed. I was finding that the light from the Kindle screen was not allowing me to relax and fall asleep... Having been sent two of Beam N Read's portable lights I figured I'd give [Beam n Read's portable lights] a try. The lights have two clip on filters that soften the glow of the light to red or orange. This is exactly what I needed. I found that with the clip on filter I was able to fall asleep quickly because the light from my Kindle screen wasn't keeping me stimulated.
